Katie was as outwardly normal as the next girl, but her genes held a dark secret. This biography charts her life from pretty, carefree twenty-something, towards creeping disability, social exclusion and her intense frustration with her physical restrictions. Katie was a remarkably determined woman and confounded medical opinion by miraculously continuing to survive, despite what some would regard as overwhelming and almost unfair odds. We had many highpoints together, but these were tempered by unimaginably twisted cruel lows, all as a direct result of an incurable genetic disorder that is - Tuberous Sclerosis. (TS).In a world that does not seem to care, and actively excludes disabled people, these are also the stories of unsung heroes in our ambulances, police cars, hospitals and even anonymously on the street. They have risen to the challenge when the awful reality of the dangers of TS and its most obvious symptom, Epilepsy, hit home. Sadly there are others, who you would normally trust, but who have spectacularly failed “under fire”.Whatever life threw at her by way of Epileptic fits, falls, people’s ignorance and many other complications, Katie would simply get up, dust herself off and start moving forward again. Events too numerous to detail here, that would crush the resolve of any other person, she shrugged off with impunity. Her fighting spirit, unstoppable character and sheer determination to live life to the full despite her increasing disabilities was inspirational. Whatever happened, she simply, absolutely and positively would not stop. This book is dedicated to and celebrates the humble strength, courage, determination and generosity of the remarkable life of Kathryn Ann Cloutman … Katie. I thought Katie was immortal … she was not… I can only seek to give such a brave lady immortality through her story. This is it.
